About us

We are a very small and very independent publisher of scientific books (and the like), with a somewhat varied and curious history. We relish our independence because it allows us to go where larger and more conservative publishers fear to tread. But, of course, there is a downside. We can't afford to advertise in the way that large publishers do and we have had problems in regard to distribution. Big distributors buy from big wholesalers.They, in turn, only stock books in high demand. Accordingly, major distributors, like Amazon in the United States have been known to proclaim that our books are either out of print or difficult to obtain Now, thanks to remarkable new technology by Bitpass we are able to offer many of our products, in PDF, for immediate download, at greatly reduced prices. Please see our BitPass Catalogue..

On the other hand if you prefer books on paper or on CD we will be happy to meet your needs in more traditional ways. Inevitably these take a little longer to deliver and will cost you rather more than purchase and delivery courtesy of Bitpass. Naturally we will be equally glad to do it both ways (e.g, paper by mail and PDF by download) if you wish us to.

Please Email books@oxygraphics.uk.net if you experience any difficulty with purchase.

PowerPoints in Photosynthesis and Related Topics

Generations of university teachers and others have spent long hours preparing material for use with slide or overhead projectors. These are increasingly superseded by PowerPoint projection but the technology, in itself, doesn't remove the need to research the subject matter or prepare and assemble the slides .We are currently assembling a number of PowerPoint presentations that will seek to address this need. Each will focus on one topic and will be able to be presented either as a single slide show in its entirety or modified according to need. Because of Bitpass we are able to offer these at very modest prices. At the moment our list of topics is very short but you will find it in our catalogue. There, for example, you will find

Chlorophyll fluorescence

This is a 20-slide show (with a little sound and animation) about what Louis Pasteur, chlorophyll fluorescence, fluorescence quenching, right and left-handed molecules, mint, carraway seeds, and DNA have in common. This ppt will also be made available from Hansatech Instruments More are planned including The Pub Understanding of Science, Starch Pictures, The Z-scheme, Oscillations. Where does the water go in Photosynthesis?, Isolation of Chloroplasts, The Oxygen Electrode, Fluorescence in Relation to Carbon Assimilation, Feeding Plants, and Photosynthetic Electron Transport.

* Why PDF? Why Google?

Why, you might well ask, are we so enthusiastic about Google and PDF? Here, are some thoughts on the matter.

Whatever happened to the beermats?

Behaviour -the Paradigm?

"Our ability to manipulate physical materials, plant and animal life has grown exponentially in the past century. We have, in comparison, made minimal advance in the study of behaviour. No accepted evolution or integration of its many diverse characteristics has been achieved. In an attempt to correct that failure, primitive forms of behaviour are identified in this paper and subsequently extended in a progression of events, which correlate with early biological evolution. The successful integration of behavioural phenomena into a single system establishes the concept as a 'paradigm': a coherent evolution leading to a framework applicable to both animal and human activity."

Time on your hands?

Our world, so we believe, was born 4,600,000,000 years ago (4.6 BYA). Whether we express it in years, millions of years, or billions of years, it is a figure that's hard enough to read at first glance, let alone grasp its meaning as a concept. From time to time (no pun intended), attempts have been made to squeeze billions of years into one day in the hope of making many millions of years more comprehensible to mere mortals, like us, more accustomed to thinking in terms of 'three score years and ten' or 'sell-by' dates. We thought we might have a go at this ourselves in the hope that one of us would get on with writing a book called 'Tardigrade Times' which we hope to publish in the for-seeable future. You can find the results of this arithmetic here .

Since the turn of the century we would like to think that we have had as many visitors as but, because we were only brave enough to install a counter on September 13th, 2003, we guessed at 5000 and that might have been more than a shade optimistic.
